The Museum of Science (MoS) is a science museum and indoor zoo located in Science Park, a plot of land spanning the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. Every day, the museum offers a number of live presentations throughout the building, as well as shows at the Charles Hayden Planetarium and the Mugar Omni Theater, New England's only domed IMAX screen. The museum is also an Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited member, and it is home to over 100 animals, many of which have been rescued and rehabilitated.
The museum began as the Boston Society of Natural History in 1830, founded by a collection of men who wished to share scientific interests. Their first meeting was held on February 9, 1830 with seven original members in attendance: Walter Channing, Benjamin D. Greene, George Hayward, John Ware, Edward Brooks, Amos Binney, and George B. Emerson.
The society's purpose was to "cultivate every branch of Natural History, and to procure and preserve specimens illustrative of the several branches." The Boston Society of Natural History opened its doors on October 1, 1830 in a small rented space on Tremont Street. In 1864, the society changed its name to the Institute of Natural History to reflect its transformation into a more active organization dedicated to promoting the study of natural sciences.
