New England Aquarium

The New England Aquarium, located in Boston, Massachusetts, is a public aquarium. In addition to the main aquarium building, the New England Aquarium's attractions include the Simons Theater and the New England Aquarium Whale Watch, which is open from April to November. The aquarium has over 22,000 members and receives over 1.3 million visitors each year.

History

The New England Aquarium was founded in 1969 by several Boston civic leaders who were concerned about the declining state of the world's oceans. The Aquarium opened to the public on August 20, 1969.

The original building, designed by Cambridge Seven Associates, is located on Central Wharf in Boston's Financial District. The 10-story, cylindrical building is made of concrete and is approximately 200 feet (61 meters) in diameter. The Aquarium's first president was Leo F. McCarthy.

The New England Aquarium's mission statement is "to present, promote and protect the world of water." The Aquarium accomplishes this mission through public education, conservation and research.

Exhibits

The New England Aquarium has over 35 exhibits, including the Giant Ocean Tank, a 200,000-gallon (750,000-liter) cylindrical coral reef exhibit. The Giant Ocean Tank is home to sharks, turtles, stingrays and other fish. Other exhibits at the Aquarium include the Edge of the Sea Tidepool, the Amazon River Forest and the Northern Waters of the World.

The Aquarium also has a variety of educational programs, including classes, camps, lectures and public events. The Aquarium offers sleepovers for families, as well as school group sleepovers and scout troop sleepovers.

Conservation and Research

The New England Aquarium is involved in a variety of conservation and research initiatives. The Aquarium's Conservation Department works to protect marine animals and their habitats through public education, scientific research and advocacy.

The New England Aquarium's Animal Rescue Program rescues and rehabilitates sick, injured and orphaned marine animals. To date, the program has rescued over 2,000 animals, including seals, turtles, dolphins and whales.

The New England Aquarium's Research Department conducts scientific research on a variety of topics, including climate change, ocean acidification and fisheries management. The Aquarium's research is conducted in partnership with other institutions, such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
